GURGAON: Do not drink and drive. Getting tough on drunk driving, the Gurgaon traffic police sentenced three people to a two-day imprisonment after 100 ml of alcohol was found in their blood. They were also fined Rs 2,000 each on Thursday.
The accused were convicted by the court of chief judicial magistrate Jasbir Singh and sent to Bhondsi jail. The accused were convicted by the court for the offence, which is punishable under Section 185 of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
The order said that in default of payment of the fine, the three convicts will have to further undergo a simple imprisonment for two days.
The three offenders were caught on Wednesday night at the Delhi-Gurgaon toll plaza by the team led by the police commissioner. Gurgaon police commissioner S S Deswal, who visited Delhi-Gurgaon toll plaza to inspect the ongoing drive against drunk driving, instructed the officers present on the spot to prepare a water-tight case against offenders so that they do not get away by just paying a meagre monetary fine.
Cops were asked to keep a record of the number of times a driver is caught for drunken driving; this information will be used in court so that frequent offenders are given harsher punishment including imprisonment.
Deswal said that there was a need to set an exemplary punishment for this offence which not only puts the drivers life at risk, but also of other road users. He added that drunk driving was the third major cause of accidental deaths in Gurgaon followed by overspeeding.
While two of Thursdays offenders were driving vehicles having Delhi registration numbers, one had Haryana number. The accused Ravinder, a resident of Bharthal in Delhi, who was driving a taxi (DL-1T-5672) was found to have 226-2 ml alcohol in blood. Munish Uniyal, a resident of sector 7, Dwarka (Delhi) driving a Maruti Zen (DL-3CR-9592), had 131-6 ml alcohol in blood. Sumeshpal, a resident of Muradnagar (Uttar Pradesh), had 260-2 ml alcohol.
According to Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act (1988), a driver who has alcohol exceeding 30mg per 100 ml of blood detected in a test by a breath analyzer can face imprisonment up to six months or fine or both. For second or subsequent offence, the jail term goes up to two years.
DCP (traffic) Bharti Arora said on Wednesday that 152 offenders were challaned for the offence and out of this, 56 alone were challaned at the toll plaza.

Federal Way students make permanent memorial for 3 drunk driving victims
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- It happens every year. Kids graduate from high school and their lives and stories move on. But Decatur High School students in Federal Way decided three lives should be remembered by future generations.
Nick Hodgins, Derek King, and Emmanuel Franco were all killed by drunk drivers.
A year ago today, Hodgins and King were in a stalled car on Interstate 5, when a drunk driver slammed into them.
“It's a cement reminder of the fact that he's not here anymore,” says Hodgins’ sister, Brandi Gleason when she looks at the memorial. “Definitely difficult but also an uplifting moment to know he's in everybody's hearts.”
Franco, a Decatur graduate, died just before New Year’s, hit by a drunk driver along 320th in Federal Way. His younger brother says it's made him more vigilant.
“If you see someone at a party with intent to possibly drive, and they're intoxicated, I'm more than willing to go up to them and say, ‘hey use some common sense,’” says Julian Franco.
The unveiling of this memorial is timely. AAA says June 10th is one of the deadliest days of the year for teens, deadly crashes among young drivers peak during the summer months. More than 7,300 teen drivers and passengers ages 13-19 died in traffic crashes between Memorial Day and Labor Day from 2005-2009.
“With graduation going on it's a big time for celebration,” says Trooper Kyle Smith, of the Washington State Patrol. “A lot of kids are taking risks that are unnecessary.”
Many of the students and parents here tonight have already learned the lesson.
“I just hope this teaches the kids over the years the dangers of drunk driving the dangers of drinking, and maybe change some people’s lives and save someone's life,” says Gleason.
The memorial sits on the front lawn of the high school. It was made possible through student-led fundraising, spear-headed by 17 year old Chloe Turner, who is graduating this weekend.

Watertown Man Charged with Drunk Driving
CHAUMONT, N.Y. — Chadwick M. Bruce, 20, of 129 S. Indiana Ave., Watertown, was charged by Jefferson County sheriff's deputies at 5:43 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of 12260 Route 12E with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and unsafe backing.
His blood alcohol content was 0.11 percent, deputies said. A BAC of 0.08 percent or greater is considered proof of intoxicated under state law.
He is summoned to appear June 20 in Lyme Town Court.

Apple to Nix Apps That Tip off Drunk Drivers
After pressure from four U.S. senators, Apple Inc. has said it will start rejecting iPhone applications that tip drivers off about police checkpoints for drunken driving.
Apple updated its app developer guidelines Wednesday to exclude such apps. On Thursday, some DUI apps were still available in the App Store, but Apple usually gives developers a chance to update their apps so they can conform to the new guidelines before booting them.
The apps often combine warnings about DUI checkpoints with warnings about speed traps and red-light cameras. Users of the applications help create the warnings by registering the locations.
An Apple spokesman had no comment on the change in the guidelines, and wouldn't say why the change was made.
Senators Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), Frank R. Lautenberg (D-N.J.), and Tom Udall (D-N.M.) asked Apple, Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the BlackBerry, and Google Inc. to remove DUI-avoidance apps in March. RIM complied, but Google refused.
Google runs an application store for phones that use its Android software. The company places far fewer restrictions on application developers than Apple does.

Crash caused by drunk driver
An impaired driving collided with a vehicle on Thursday at the intersection of Hemlock Street. Wayne Wowk, 57, was taken to Greater Sudbury Police headquarters after the crash, where he took an intoxilyzer test. Wowk was over the legal limit and attempted to give police a fake name.
He was also found to be a prohibited driver and was charged with impaired operation of vehicle, exceeding the legal limit, obstructing police and driving while disqualified. These charges haven't been proven in court and all accused are innocent until proven guilty, police said. Wowk is the first to have his name released under the police's new impaired driving policy.

Michigan Wide Receiver Sentenced For Drunk Driving
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On Friday, University of Michigan wide receiver Darryl Stronum was sentenced to 2 years probation on charges of operating while visibly impaired.
Stronum also received a suspended sentence of 365 days in jail. so if he violates probation he could spend time in jail.
Under a plea agreement, a charge of of driving with a suspended license will be dropped if Stronum successfully completes a sobriety program monitored by the court.
In September 2008, during his freshman year, police charged Stronum with operating a vehicle while visibly impaired, and he was subsequently jailed for three nights in July 2010 for multiple probation violations.
